The season brilliantly builds on events from other “Star Trek” series, in particular the Temporal Cold War from “Star Trek: Enterprise,” the result of which is that Discovery cannot return to its own time. The seventh episode, “Unification III,” continues themes that began in the two-part “Unification” story from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” It even features a glimpse of Leonard Nimoy from “TNG.” The two-parter “Terra Firma” links back to one of the most memorable episodes of “The Original Series” while also setting up the planned “Section 31” series starring Michelle Yeoh. It also includes a nice reference to the Kelvin timeline of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” films, helping to establish that that alternate reality exists much like the Mirror universe.
The main cast are brilliant as always with their chemistry finely honed over the years. New additions to the Discovery crew include Blu del Barrio as Adira Tal, Ian Alexander as Gray Tal, and David Ajala as Cleveland “Book” Booker (not a member of the crew, but affiliated with it). They all bring great presence and blend well with the established crew dynamic. Oded Fehr is Charles Vance, the Fleet Admiral of Starfleet. It’s always great to see Fehr and he steps into the role perfectly. Janet Kidder plays Osyraa, the leader of the Emerald Chain, and brilliantly stands her own as a sympathetic antagonist. Finally, Paul Guilfoyle plays an important character I won’t name in order to avoid spoilers.
Bonus features on the Blu-ray collection include deleted scenes, Michelle Paradise’s writer’s log, a look at the stunts in this season, a look at constructing the sets, interviews with Sonequa Martin-Green and Kenneth Mitchell, and a gag reel. This Blu-ray set is great for those who like to have their own “Star Trek” home media collection or who don’t want to subscribe to a streaming service.
I originally started to watch Season 2 when Chris Pike and Spock showed up. I love the two actors portraying these characters.
It turns out that Discovery is more than discovering other planets and scientific phenomena, it's about discovering the true selves of each of the characters. Truly a show about Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.
This series has a lot of heart and soul searching and that appeals to me.
The special effects are excellent as are the story lines.
Live Long and Prosper Star Trek universes. I think Gene Roddenberry would be proud of this franchise as it continues to grow at the hands of his son Eugene.
The only acceptable complaint about DISCOVERY is that the tech from 20 years before TOS looks much more advanced. True, because of 50 years of progress in CGT (do you really want to watch a newly produced show that tries to excite you with a flashing red light on a cardboard control panel? Seriously?)
DISCOVERY has actually "solved" this anachronism slightly by moving the show 900 years into the future, where tech IS so advanced. This doesn't work perfectly, but....it is fiction, remember.
Anyway, to Season 3: Season 1, because it did not have 26 episodes (only 15) to get the bugs out, suffered a lot of obvious growing pains. Season 2 was much better and now Season 3 has seen DISCOVERY completely hit its stride. Aside from the introduction of a few new characters, the main cast has built enough of a background that we are familiar with faces and opinions and characteristics and we can see each react to situations in a recognizable way. The secondary cast still has a bit to go because of the limited number of episodes produced, though Detmer, Reno and Owosekun got some more air time and are very interesting characters (we need to see and get to know Rhys and Bryce much more).
Because of the developments in the characters, more anxiety and tension has been raised in the plots as viewers want to know what happens to them. The plots themselves have improved from season to season and the set up (no spoilers here) for Season 4 is very well done.
In all, DISCOVERY, though NOT TOS, TNG, VOYAGER or ENTERPRISE (though there are some traces of DS9), it is fitting extremely well into the Star Trek Universe!
Top reviews from other countries
